Am I covered if I rent a Moving Truck?

Am I covered if I rent a Moving Truck?

Almost everyone will rent a box truck or a trailer when they move to a new house or apartment, or when they move the son or daughter to college.
But does your auto policy cover the rental truck or trailer?

For the trailer, the liability automatically extends from the vehicle that is pulling it. So for instance if it breaks loose while being pulled and causes an accident, the vehicle pulling it would be liable for any damages caused.  But any physical damage to the trailer it self would not be covered.  You would need to ask at the rental counter if coverage for physical damage  is available  for purchase.  If not you would have to pay for the repair out of pocket.

If you are insured with a quality insurance carrier and you rent a truck and you have full coverage on at least one of your vehicles, then you would automatically have full coverage on the rented truck.

But not all insurance carriers are the same! Many insurance carriers do no automatically include coverage for rented vehicles, especially trucks.

Before you rent a moving truck, check with your agent to confirm you have coverage for rented moving trucks.
