Does my Insurance Cover me on vacation

Many people are starting to plan for a Spring Vacation.  Before you go, it is a good idea to check with your insurance agent and get an understanding of what coverages follow you.  If you are insured with a highly rated company, your policy provides many coverages you will need.  Below is a quick summary of what is covered under most good insurance policies.

Property.  A good homeowners policy will cover up to 10% of Coverage C, Personal Property, away from home.  So things like your Golf Clubs, Bicycles, clothes, luggage, ski's are covered if they are lost, damaged or stolen.

Liability.  Your liability coverage follows you if you accidently cause damage or injury to people or property.  As an example, you rent a vacation home or condo, while cooking dinner you get called away and a small fire starts causing damage to the kitchen cabinet and smoke damage to the paint. Your Liability coverage would cover this.

Car Rentals. Most highly rated carriers will provide full coverage to cars you rent, provided you have at least one vehcle on your personal auto policy that has Comprehensive and Collision coverage.  So the rented car would have the same coverage.   However, there are possibly other charges the rental company could charge you if you are involved in an accident with the rental car.  See our blog article titled Does My Personal Auto Policy Cover Rental Cars
